Monoclonal Antibodies: A tool in clinical research

چکیده
Indian Journal of Clinical Medicine 2013:4 9 Abstract: Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) are an old immunological tool with applications in the fields of immunology, biotechnology, biochemistry, and applied biology. Production of monoclonal antibodies using hybridoma technology was discovered in 1975 by Georges Kohler of West Germany and Cesar Milstein of Argentina. Modern-day research on MAbs from laboratories worldwide is revealing additional applications in diverse branches of sciences. Recently, MAbs have been widely applied in the field of clinical medicine. Currently, MAbs account for one-third of all the new therapeutic treatments for breast cancer, leukemia, arthritis, transplant rejection, asthma, and psoriasis, with many more late-stage clinical trials being conducted. In this review, we outline the (i) production of MAbs, (ii) application of MAbs, (iii) antibody engineering, and (iv) pharmaceutical application of MAbs. The future prospect of this review lies in the applicability of monoclonal antibodies as a molecule for understanding and monitoring the biology of disease and its role in research, clinical, diagnostic, analytical, and pharmaceutical applications.

Therapeutic Applications of Monoclonal Antibodies in Multiple Sclerosis
Despite the various therapies available, the use of monoclonal antibodies is a highly specific approach that has only recently been of interest to researchers. The properties of antibodies have led to their use in the treatment of various diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes and multiple sclerosis (MS). MS, a chronic inflammatory disease, occurs commonly in young adults. Th...
متن کاملAnti-CD19 Monoclonal Antibodies: a New Approach to Lymphoma Therapy
CD19 is expressed on B- lineage cells and follicular dendritic cells and plays a key role in B cell malignancies and autoimmune diseases. Thus, it has been considered as potential target for several monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). For decades, chemotherapy has been known as one of the major antitumor therapies eradicating high proliferative tumor cells. But, anti- CD19 mAbs developed for treating...

Background: Pancreatic carcinoma is the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States and due to its late presentation, only few patients would be candidates for the curative treatment of pancreactomy. Monoclonal antibodies have brought hope to targeted therapy. Objectives: To identify new biomarkers, a panel of monoclonal antibodies was genera...
متن کاملDetermination of the Characteristics of Leishmania Parasite Using Monoclonal Antibodies Isolated in Iran
Considering the different clinical symptoms of leishmaniasis in Iran, and the wide distribution of its agent and the little information in this regard, this study was performed to characterize the responsible variants using monoclonal antibodies. A total of 156 isolates of Leishmania from patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis and one isolate from rat were characterized using the standard monoc...
متن کاملMonoclonal Antibodies as Therapeutic Agents: Advances and Challenges
Despite the major advances in conventional forms of treatment (i.e. surgical techniques, radiotherapy and chemotherapy) and improved survival rates, cancer is still the second leading cause of death in developing countries. One major limitation of cytotoxic drugs and radiation in the treatment of cancer patients is their inability to discriminate between malignant and normal tissues. This in tu...
متن کاملMonoclonal and Polyclonal Antibodies Specific to Human Fibromodulin
Background: The unique expression of fibromodulin (FMOD) in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has been previously reported. Detecting FMOD in CLL patients using specific anti-FMOD mAbs might provide a promising method in detection, monitoring, and prognosis of CLL. Objectives: In this study, we aimed for producing specific antibodies agains...
